- About SLP Nerdcast: Meet Our Innovative Team
ABOUT US Removing obstacles to continuing education one podcast at a time. We’re a small SLP-run business built by busy SLPs for busy SLPs For too long, continuing education in our field has been dominated by big companies who do more for their bottom-line than they do for clinicians. We were tired of: 💰 Expensive Conferences – You shouldn't have to get on a plane or cough up hundreds of dollars to get quality information. ❌ Paywalls – Research that can help clinicians, clients, and families shouldn't be locked behind price tags that benefit publishing firms. 🙄 Irrelevant Content – Continuing education should be helpful. As working clinicians, we need relevant content that we can easily apply to our jobs today. Challenging the status quo: At SLP Nerdcast, we publish FREE open-access libraries and continuing education courses through our podcast and YouTube channels. Our mission is to shake up the CE industry 💥 and close the research-to-practice gap 🔬 What you can expect from us: 🆓 Open-Access Courses It's our mission to expand access to clinically relevant research. Our podcast courses will always be published publicly so learning is FREE for everyone. Access our content on YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts anywhere, anytime. 🔑 Key Clinical Takeaways We share FREE downloads, resources, and real-world, evidence-based clinical insights that you can use to immediately benefit your practice. ⬇️ Low-Cost CEUs We continuously monitor overhead to keep our CE processing costs as affordable as possible. Certificates of completion (with ASHA CE Registry processing included) for nonmembers typically cost just $9 per course. Explore SLP Nerdcast Membership options here. Either way, this episode has something for every SLP, calling out some really big elephants in the room, including how to avoid bad goal writing that leads to ineffective therapy. Nina Reeves is back with her no-nonsense approach, sharing current, evidence-based intervention strategies to help school-aged children who stutter. If you haven’t already listened, pop back to the previous Nerdcast with Nina to set a strong foundation of principles and attitudes that puts these techniques into perspective. Nina’s got some tough love for you and me, but don’t worry, as Kate assures “Nobody’s hitting anybody with a stick” (it will makes sense when you listen, trust me). There’s plenty of grace, humor, and solid how-to in this info-packed episode as Nina empties your bucket of the “cr@p” and loads it full of fluency intervention gold to start your journey towards comfort, competence, and confidence with students who stutter. Tune in and learn about the nuts and bolts alongside the incredible role of social-emotional experience in effective stuttering intervention. Nina Reeves, M.S. CCC-SLP, BCS-F is a board-certified specialist in fluency disorders and the co-founder of StutteringTherapy Resources, Inc. Summary Written by Tanna Neufeld, MS, CCC-SLP, Contributing Editor Customer ReviewS Nina was knowledgeable about stuttering and provided the information in a positive, engaging, and informative manner. I walked away with so many tools that I can already start using. Lisa This was everything I needed to hear about fluency and more. Practical information and ready to implement strategies. It was also a non-intimidating introduction to reframing my thinking about fluency and the first step towards unlearning what I learned in grad school over a decade ago. Lauren This course gave me a new perspective on how to treat school-age students with fluency issues!! It's not about a "cure", but about strategies that make communication easier!! Describe the characteristics of curriculum-based measures Explain how/why oral narrative retells are appropriate for screening and progress monitoring of language. Time Order Agenda: 10 MIN: Introduction and Disclosures 15 MIN: Descriptions of the purposes of assessment and identify those necessary for MTSS 15 MIN: Review of how student engagement relates to language outcomes 10 MIN: Review of strategies for implementing key findings from dosage and frequency research in your current practice 5 MIN: Summary and Closing What's Inside: 2 Lessons Course Description: You’re an awesome school-based speech-language pathologist (SLP), the resident language expert, the speech closet hostess with the mostest. You’re chugging along, doing your assessment thing, determining eligibility here, pushing into the classroom there, pulling kids out, chattin’ with the teacher- you’ve got this! Then BAM!! This episode comes out of nowhere and reveals an unknown blind spot in our educational system, putting a serious snag in your assessment status quo. No worries, the Nerds and their experts have your back! This week, Dr. Trina Spencer and Dr. Doug Peterson step up once again with an eye-opening follow-up to their previous episodes on dynamic assessment (DA) and Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports (MTSS) for language assessment and intervention in schools. Tune in to go the extra MTSS and DA mile and learn about your essential role in the screening and prevention domain, an area of SLP not often explored, but so essential to a student’s academic success. You’ll drive away with a better understanding of the roles of language assessment beyond eligibility determination, along with (free but fabulous) tools you’ll need to adjust for that screening blindspot and to help your education team set students up for language (and therein, academic) success. There’s free stuff, witty banter, soap boxes, and MacGyvering. Don’t miss out!
